HELP with Questions

Hello there!
I`m really new to this and I`ve just bought a laptop. I have downloaded NetStumbler and I have few questions on wardriving and Netstumbler.

From my house here in Daytona Beach, Florida, I can pick up 3 APs, which are not encrypted! ;)
Now, I was reading this

QUESTION:How do I change the default broadcast "All your 802.11b are belong to us." in Filename: Netstumbler.exe Version: 0.3.23 Filesize: 65.54 Kb ?

Answer:
1.Backup the executable first.

2.Using a hexeditor such as Ultraedit open the file in HEX mode and do an ASCII search for "All your 802.11b are belong to us." (without the quotes) and replace with something that fits such as "Resistance is futile. We are Borg."

3.Save new file and use.

Does this mean that actually NetStumbler broadcasts this message to the AP? I don`t understand :(? HELP

Plus, when i connect to a non encrypted AP, will they actually see i`m connected anc can so something about it?

THANKS A LOT

Looks like you need to read alittle more.
Read the FAQ.

question on detection, yes NS broadcasts that messages to the AP.
With the correct software AP operators can detect your log-in and mac to their AP.

Now I am going to be nice<VEG>
I really hope you have permission to associate yourself to these three AP in your area. If not what your doing is ILLEGAL, and can land you with a butt buddy named BUBBA. This forum does not condone association with APs that are not specified as an OPEN/FREE/PUBLIC AP. This will also invite lots of FLAME.

ohh I see...well I read the FAQ really well, though I think that having questions is perfectly human, so I posted those just to make sure I was on the right track.

...and, I did not say I was connecting to those 3 APs, did I?
Apart from the fact that those AP are actually from friends of mine, so please do not take everything for granted.

:)

Thanks for the replies.

If they are your friend's APs, then why are you worried about them "seeing you and doing something about it"?

for one I want to know how can someone be connected to my network and if it is secure enough. I tried to connect to my AP with a laptop of the guy that owns one of the AP I was talking about and actually I can`t see netstumbler connecting.

For two, do you ever laugh with friends? If so you know that neat tricks can produce a lot of laugh.

I`m not a script kiddie...Im not a haxor or whaever you want to call it.

:)

So that basically answer your question.

If you are concerned about your own network then read this.

You won't see NetStumbler "connect" because that is not what it does. The connection occurs through the adapter's client manager or through the OS. NetStumbler will not help you gain access to a network, it will only tell you that it is there.

Netstumbler does not connect, your client manager does the connecting.

Netstumbler sends a probe to find APs broadcasting a SSID, just like when the client manager is "scanning."
