New to NS

I am just starting out, know nothing about WIFI/public sites and their use, how to make sure 802.11b card in LT is working. (other than one of the two leds that lights up).
I have been reading some of the posts, but still don't understand enough to jump in. "Help" looked like the place to start!
I use Windows 98SE on my DT and LT, and will be receiving a DT 802.11b card shortly to start a home WIFI network
What I hope to end up with is beiing able to synchronize my DT and LT, and later link my wife's DT to the system.
I hope to be able to use various public sites when we are travelling, working on our family tree. I'd like to be able to pick up our Email, and maybe make some short research checks on the Inet.
As I have said, I know nothing about this subject. I did start the installation on the LT, but not sure everything went in right. I also can't find anything on the harddrive that looks like I should take it out to completely remove the installation so I could re-install it. (it didn't show up on the install/remove panel in control panel.)
Any help, suggestions of where to look for information, etc will be greatly appreciated Thanks, ringtail (John R)

You do not state what brand of card you are using, but NS will ONLY work on a Win98 system with a Hermes chipset card. Look in this file:
C:/Program Files/Network Stumbler/README.HTML

Additionally, all the program files are located in that directory.

NS may not be the best choice for someone like yourself. It is more of a tool for networking and security types. You may wish to look at a progam like Boingo's for finding public hotspots.

Thanks Thorn, for the reply.
As I said, I am totally new at this.
I looked at Boingo, but thought it was for LINUX, and that is something else I have never had any knowledge of!
I will look again, and may be download it, and look at it some more. any other suggestions for software?
I am not even sure I have the card in right/completely. It shows one LED lit when I turn the LT on, and where I live it is at least 12 miles to a town.
The box for the card just says: WLAN PCMCIA Card, and, 11mbps Wireless LAN. Card same and on back it says FCC ID: H8NWLC010D53 (Taiwan naturally).
Actually it's public sites, and Email pickup, minor searching on the Inet, that I am wanting, and if I get the LT working, identifying what is a public site.
Do you know of any sites I might use for the above? We have a wireless BBS in Olney, IL, and maybe I can get some help from him, but don't know.
I guess Net stumbling isn't what I'm after.
Thanks again John R.

I went back and re-read the Boingo site. and I will download the software.
At least it will give me a starting point!
I appreciate the answers, and will continue to monitor the forum(s)
