It's funny to read the sheeple comments.

Kismet on XP SP2 + Belkin Pre-N True MIMO Card

I want to run Kismet, but I'm not sure what to do. A guide said that Kismet WONT run on XP with any card because XP dosen't have drivers. Is that true? I have XP SP2 With a Belkin Wirless Pre-N True MIMO card. I have messed around with Cygwin (trying to install gcc so I can compile kismet), but it dosent work.

Bootable linux cd w/ Kismet on it, problem solved. There is at least 3 out that may work.

That's why in bold letters at the top of the guide it tells you that these instructions are to work with a modified WRT54G acting as a Kismet_drone.

As dakkon2k said, if your card is supported by linux, try a liveCD

On only 512 MB RAM? Will that work? How would I write the packet dumps to disk? Also, will it mess up my comp if I boot with a livecd?

A live CD won't touch your computer. 512MB of RAM will work. Get a USB thumb drive for packet dumps.

"Only 512 MB"? You're spoiled. Most live CDs will work well on 128MB, and some will boot off 32 MB.
archer007 wrote: How would I write the packet dumps to disk?
Use another memory device as theprez98 suggested.
archer007 wrote:Also, will it mess up my comp if I boot with a livecd?
No, why would it? It's not overwriting the HD contents, it's merely booting off the CD, and loading everything from that.

Ok, great. Im a tech person but I've never even seen a linux computer before (always XP!). I have 3 thumb drives, so no problem there. Do you have any specific Linux release you'd reccomend (include url, please)? Also, does the kismet tar.gz and gcc (program) to compile kismet have to be on the CD? Or could I simply put those files on my thumb drive?

I asked about the LiveCD because my dad is an MS fanatic who only has 1 non-microsoft program on his PC. Whenever I talk about Linux, he forecasts doom for my comp ;)

There are live CDs such as Auditor Security Collection that have Kismet on them already. Others include WHAX (WHAX and Auditor are combining into BackTrack), SLAX, and Knoppix STD (Security Tools Distribution).

If you're looking for a general linux live CD, Ubuntu is pretty good.

Can't wait until February 5. The torrent will be up and Backtrack will be installed to my HD in no time. I am eagerly awaiting the next version of KSTD as well. Guess Troppix is gone for good. It's a shame, although the picture of Devine as the bootsplash was kind of unusual.

Auditor didn't work for me!

I burned a LiveCD with the latest version of Auditor and got this. Bah. Did the CD write incorrectly? Maybe I should have checked the MD5... I burned the CD using Nero Express at 4x on a CD-RW. It's late now, so I hope you can help me figure out what went wrong. Im going to bed.

And what relevance does this has with the scope of the NetStumbler Forums ?
