Anyways, if you really need a quick fix, just install an older version of the Orinoco firmware on your card (6.X) Then it will work right out of the box without mucking around with the modules.

...

Unfortunately, the .15 Orinoco driver included with FC5 (kernel 2.6.17-1.2145_FC5) does not appear to have "monitor" mode built into it afterall. I've got a Lucent 802.11b IEEE/WaveLAN Gold card (ie. a rebranded Orinoco card) running firmware v6.16, but "iwpriv" doesn't show a monitor mode for it (Kismet also complains that no 'monitor' mode is available).

I can't seem to get any of the drivers at http://www.projectiwear.org/~plasmahh/orinoco.html, to compile on my FC5 system either (tried R12 and R13). :(

Any ideas on how to get this working?

Intresting. I will take a look at it when I get back from Alabama. I have not tried the 2.6.17 kernel yet and I don't have my Orinoco with me.

Do me a favor, and put your card in, type "dmesg" in a terminal, and tell me what it says (like the last 15 lines or so about the Orinoco card).

Punch in a "lspci" too.

Sure thing... :)

Oh crud... it's running firmware 8.72, not 6.16! Whoops! :) Guess that "might" explain why the monitor mode is not working with my card and the default FC5 Orinoco drivers. Ugh... unfortunately, I don't know where to get a hold of the older Orinoco firmware revisions. Perchance could someone point me in the right direction?

I don't suppose plasmahh might be working on an updated 0.13e driver for 2.6.17-1.2145_FC5, eh? Nah, I'm probably not that lucky. :) Of course, even if he were, I still hate the idea of having to recompile the bloody kernel just to get it working.

Since you asked for it, I've listed a copy of my "lspci" output below. Note that this laptop also has a built-in Broadcom 43xx series wireless adapter.

Thanks, unfortunately all of the firmware links on that page are broken. :(

Thanks for the firmware link. Although I haven't tried installing an older Orinoco firmware on my Lucent WaveLAN/IEEE Gold card yet, I thought I should mention that in addition to the Lucent card, I also have a Dell TrueMobile 1150 802.11b card (which is really just a rebranded Lucent WaveLAN/IEEE Gold card). My Dell card is running Orinoco firmware v6.16 (as opposed to the v8.72 firmware on my Lucent card), so I plugged in the Dell card and voila, monitor mode works with it on my FC5 system with the default/built-in Orinoco driver!

I'll try reflashing my Lucent card with one of the older Orinoco firmware revisions to see if that will fix the problem with it.

Thanks for the help!

Hey, i'm following this thread because i'm having the same issue. Just curious if you guys resolved the orinoco/FC5 issues. I'm running the same drivers, Lucent/Agere 8.72 firmware, and the dragorn drivers do not compile, monitor mode is not turned on either. Do i have to flash to the older firmware, or do something to get the dragorn drivers to compile?

thanks

Flashing with a older firmware is definately the easiest way to go. I think I used 7.52. It looks like it was one of the kernel patches they used that is stopping the Plasmah Orinoco drivers from compiling. Dragorn's drivers are really broke for fc5. Have not had much more of a chance to look at it and probably won't because FC6 is right around the corner. We will see what they break in that release.

Interesting... i'll give it a try. So the firmware removed the monitor mode, and using the older firmware, there is no need for different drivers, like 0.13e?

dang, now i'm real confused. my card says "Enterasys RoamAbout DS" on the outside, and the dmesg says "Lucent/Agere 8.72" so i'm sure i have what we are talking about, but i downloaded a couple of the old firmware's and got the error message: No Wireless Card Driver Found. Make sure the right driver is installed, and the wireless card is installed. The card works fine in windows, but the firmware patch can't find it. ideas??

Doh, those Enterasys cards can be tricky.

Sounds like you need to some driver hex editing. Take a look through these threads. Otherwise, if you find the flash from Enterasys, you can use that too. the newest release from Enterasys was one of the 6.x versions.

Because I'm actually in the process or helping someone else out through email who's using Familiar I came across this that might be helpful:

OK, thanks to both for your help. I found the Enterasys drivers (which came up as cabletron), however, even it said that my drivers were not found! Then i realized that this card had Orinoco Gold Classic 8.72 firmware put on it. Does that affect what the firmware is looking for? Can't seem to backtrack to an old firmware, can't seem to compile the dragorn drivers in FC5/2.6.17...

Got it patched. Thanks for the hex editor instructions! still no monitor mode on 8.10...
