i just put redhat 7.2 on my 266mhz PI laptop (dual boot w/ windoze so i can run netstumbler) and it is a DOG! my machine only has 96MB ram and it just thrashes continuously.

i seem to remember the days when u could run linux on a 386. now it runs slower than Win2K w/ the same hardware! even boots slower.

anyone know what's a good lean & mean linux distro to use on wimpy hardware?

I run Debian without X on my pos laptop. It seems to run pretty well, if I do need to run any X stuff then I use Blackbox.

I run Linux and Kismet (http://www.kismetwireless.net) on an old IBM Thinkpad. 120 MHZ, 64 meg ram. Works great.

You can see it around 10 minutes into the "Wireless Point of Sale Security" video below.

It's a nice shot with Kismet showing Petsmart and Best Buy ip ranges.

Using RedHat 7.1 for now. Moving to 7.3 and a Cisco card when I have time.

No rm file download.

Meeting is in Agoura. If there is interest, we'll try to do the next meeting in Pasadena, at Pasadena City College.

The answer...

man, i've had some problems with red-hat too. mostly mild annoyances, but a friend of mine installed rh7.3 today and said it was like 4 GB! that's crazy. personally, i like mandrake. it's easy, everything works out of the box, has a nice installation too. i think you just have to pay special attention to what packages you install, especially daemons and such.

That is about as striped down of a distrobution as you can get. Be warned!!!!! it is for ONLY TRUE UNIX/LINUX GEEKS!!!!!

Otherwise just whatch what you install. I have SuSe running on an old compaq 486/50Mhz laptop with 24meg of ram. and it rocks.
