With $99 dollars I can purchase a lot of tootsie rolls...

At least they beat M$ at using the word "Lindows"

Well if they battle in court, chances are they will lose... probably not because a judgement, but because M$ has more $$ than this group.... and the legal fees alone are high enough to bring companies to their knees...

He cited evidence - including Microsoft's own dictionary of computing - to support the view that a window manager was already a generic term for a distinct class of software by the time Microsoft first announced Windows in late 1983.

Using M$ dictionary against them.

That's poetic justice!!

I just installed Lindows last night.

It is based on Xandros (which is inturn based on Debian) I didn't get a chance to play with it much, (my son required attentions).

I didn't try running in Win32 apps (although the setup.exe on the lindows cd ran).

Yes! Please do. Hopefully it'll be more than linux functuality with microsoft's price tag. I really want to try it myself but can't afford the license. D'oh.

As I said, I didn't get to play with it much.

Here are my opinions so far:

Setup:
My god, a baboon could install Lindows. I setup on an unused box, with an empty drive. Booted from CD, and after the kernal loaded it asked me to click OK that I wanted to erase everything on the drive and continue. After clicking OK, I am asked to enter a computername, and a "Security Passord" (root password) if I would like to do so. At that point there is a warning that Lindows.com can NOT recover your lost security password.

After clicking Next, Lindows installs. After rebooting, you come to either a password prompt or directly to the desktop.

UI:
Looks like Windows mixed with a bit of KDE. It apprears that the UI is just a them, but it does a nice job at replicating Windows. Click on the (whatever its called) button (where the Start button it) and up pops a menu that looks like a Windows Start menu, programs, settings, my documents etc.

They did a good job of making everything familar to windows users.

You can get a Shell. The file browser works like Windows Explorer. There is a c:\ folder, where windows user's would feel comfortable (the Program Files folder is in there among other things).

I am a *nix n00b, so I can't really comment on the Nix side of things. I couldn't run ipchains, but ifconfig worked. I couldn't get my NIC to work, although Lindows detected it, and I could ping my IP put nothing else.

I'll try to play around with it more tonight, and give yall more info.

Sounds nice ... I know they have some screenshots on the lindows website but do you think you could post some screenshots on a website somewhere of some of the features and windows??

I am typing this from Lindows.

I am actually kinda disappointed. Lindows is nothing more than a gussied up Debian with Wine preinstalled, and a KDE theme that makes it look like Windows.

I was expecting more.

I have tried to install the Windows version of Y! Messenger, Trillian, and NetStumbler none of which work.

Yahoo messenger doesn't die, it just refuses to install because I do not have IE 4 or above.

How do I create a screenshot in Linux? I don't have a proggy equilivent to paint, what should I install? Gimp?

I see Lindows hasn't proved too popular, here's some news anyway:
