GNER (UK Train) WiFi Howto for Linux Users

After spending 6 months travelling weekly between Edinburgh (Scotland) and London (England) - I've put together a guide for folks who wish to use the train WiFi system to access the internet. It is quite easy and I've included extra tech information with screen shots of the system in action:

It is quite cool in that you can connect to the network - with no internet access - without paying so one could presumably have a LAN party on a high speed train.

Nice work on the How-To. You might want to add a direct link to an online version of their official connection pamphlet, if they have such a thing.

You said that you can connect to the network, and chose not to authenticate to for Internet access. Have you tried if it is possible to connect to a friends laptop on the train, i.e. playing a LAN game, sending LAN messages to each other, etc ?

Just to let you know...

...the first link on the page is bad...

http://www.gner.co.uk>/

It should be http://www.gner.co.uk/

I also passed your page on to a cousin of mine that has a friend in Edinburgh. He may find it of interest...

Thanks...

thanks for the html comment - I must have slipped when typing!

As regards intermachine linkup on the train. I was running ethereal (linux pcap ethernet grabber) and I could see laptops that were not browsing the web but were polling for mailboxes and browsemaster requests - typical MS stuff always talking and looking for a company network.

I went on board with a mate and I could nmap him and connect to him even though I was not actually a paid up internet user. The theory is that you could have 20 mates in one carraige (group booking are encouraged by GNER) and play a 5 hour LAN party on the way to Edinburgh from London. How cool is that?

I am not sure if one could have an inter-carraige game - but from my analysis of the other wifi devices I think that the LAN must bridge between carraiges.
