I feel that I posted a request for help in a polite manner, in the appropriate section of the forum. I'd stated that I'd tried searching for answers to no avail, and made it clear that posting a new thread was my last resort.

However I *still* get pounced on. This is the *newbie* section isn't it? What's wrong with a newbie (I hate that word) asking a newbie level question in the newbie section of the forum?

Pounced on?

You asked, you got answers, you were given advice. Go use it and see if you can resolve your problem.

ie. VERIFY your setup is actually able to detect anything. As it sounds right now you are on the wrong side of "should".

I removed my first post because I knew this is where this thread would end up. And you posting this was just fuel on the fire.

It still doesn't sound like you understand networking. If your laptop and PDA are in infrastructure mode (IE they want to connect to an AP) then NS WILL NOT detect them. If they are in Ad-HOC mode (they are searching for another laptop , computer or PDA in Ad-hoc) then NS WILL detect them.

In order to verify you setup you need to turn on NS on your laptop and put the PDA's wireless card in Ad-Hoc mode or find an AP that is broadcasting.

I'll take your advice and try using netstumbler to detect a different device.

I did search, promise. Cross my heart and hope to have my genitalia chewed by a large rodent.

I'm using it at home, it's my personal laptop and my personal PDA.

Why don't you put both devices in ad-hoc (peer) mode and then see if you can spot anything with NS?

The next question from this user will surely be:

Why do i keep finding my ad-hoc PDA a million times? And why does its MAC keep changing?? Please help me, I've searched really hard...

Painfully true

Start with the basics: Since you're not using a 100% supported card, you have to see if the NDIS drivers are loading correctly. The native drivers will not work. Make sure the device running NS is not part of any network by seting the SSID to "ANY".

After those are checked off, start NS and see it will pick up an AP or an Ad-Hoc device. If you are going to detect an Ad-Hoc device of your own, make sure that it's actually in Ad-Hoc mode, and set the SSID to something you know is unique. (ie: "StormsBigAdHocNetworK" vs. "linksys")

If it still doesn't work, get a 100% supported card (ORiNOCO Gold Classic.)

I've put my PDA in ad-hoc mode and it keep getting lots of different results and my MAC address keeps changing!

Just kidding, calm down, you *sillies*.

I went for a little spin, and found a couple of devices. So "hooray" I *am* an idiot.

The problem would then appear to be due to the fact (that you all correctly stated) that neither the laptop or PDA were in Ad-hoc mode. However, whilst I was aware what Ad-hoc mode was, I couldn't find any way to set either device into Ad-hoc mode (only to allow them to search for other ad-hoc devices).

Perhaps "pounced on" was a little strong, but you did throw a wobbler saying that you didn't feel like spoonfeeding, which prompted my reply. "If I laugh, 'tis that I may not weep" and all that.

Still, I think a few of you, despite being knowledgeable about wireless communication, could do with some lessons in communicating with other human beings (piece of advice, calling someone a retard isn't considered a 'nice' thing to do).

I'm sure this post will cause some of you to get your backs up as you appear quite sensative/moody, but believe me when I say that's not my intention. I simply want to point out that if you're going to have a "Newbie" section to the forum it might be an idea to try and be nice to newcomers.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. It *was* useful, I'd just give it an ebay style rating of  for presentation ;)

Piss off, you're a pain in the ass and a retard. Take a month off.

BTW...this post has been moved out of the Lounge. Have at it...

Go back to ebay where you have the pinks to protect you and hold your hand.

Please show me WHERE on this forums guidelines it states that we should be nice to moronic fucktards who expect to be spoonfeed ?
We ARE nice towards those who searched for info, read and digested that info, and then composed readable, intelligent questions about items which weren't clear or explained in the found info.

Contrary to many other sites, we expect people to use their brains first, an ability it clearly looks like you are lacking.

Now go away and try not to feel bad about your pussy hurting...
