I often run multiple programs on the same computer or multiple computers on a LAN that need GPS information. It would be nice to be able to have this support built in rather than using comfoolery etc.

Sometimes I have a LAN in my car, Linux and Windows. With a tcp/ip option I could share one GPS between all the computers in the same car. :-)

Have you tried to compile gpsd under cygwin?

You could also split the data line at the serial port and run it to the two platforms...otherwise Comfoolery is your best bet. Besides, its free and it works. NS is a nice, simple program.

Problem: Comfoolery and UI-View (Ham APRS) don't mix. If Netstumber supported this option it would be of great help.

Note: gpsd support is native to most UNIX based software. I'm encoraging Windows software delelopers to do the same. This method is a very elegant and VERY reliable method to share GPS data. Comfoolery is great but it's not compatible with everything.

I already do the hardware serial line splitting. But 3 USB serial ports seems silly when this is probably not a difficult option to add.

The cleanest way would be to code a virtual serial port driver that would duplicate the data of the GPS...

This way you would interface with alwredy existing software...

I see. I luck out and my TNC has a GPS input, so I only need one port for my HAM stuff. TH-D7A(G) is a very cool HT...and no additional software for basic beaconing.

I just got a D700!

I've asked the author of UI-View to add this same gps over tcp/ip feature.

If you run a split of your GPS signal into your D700, then you should be able to pull the GPS info along with all your TNC info over the same link...depends on how you init the TNC, I think.

I've been personally playing with DOSAPRS at home...particularly because I enjoy how it displays the map on more of a radar-like screen...plus the way it displays weather stations is the bomb (Just->Weather).

You know of any 9600 baud APRS networks that are operating yet?

OT: Do either of you have any good basic links for APRS? A couple of friends have mentioned to me, but I don't know any details, other than looking at FindU.com Is it 2m? (I hope so, I've got a few older 2m mobiles kicking around...)

Lots of HAM information and APRS links. Stephen attends SOCALWUG and has one of THE best most professional radio/computer car installations I've ever seen. Multiple GPS, HF, SSTV and APRS.

The easiest way to do APRS is with a Kenwood D700 or D7a. Otherwise you'll need to setup a soundcard TNC.

BTW. At one meeting someone asked for a show of hands, how many Amateur Radio license holders were in attendance, around half of the attendees raised their hands! Perhaps another forum section for Amateur Radio?

A ham section might not be too bad of an idea, particularly since part of the ISM band that 802.11b uses is secondary user to the tail part of one of the Amateur bands.

Considering the caliber of some of the posters on this board, I'd also recommend it be kept ham only (i.e. send us your callsign and we sign you up) except for board moderators.

I like the idea of a Hams Only forum, and will pass it on to bks. Actually, most of the mods here are Hams already, AFAIK.
