I was talking to a friend tonight and he mentioned that a company uses a laser beam to align antennas. He said that the laser can travel something like 10 miles and uses 10W of power.Anyone heard of this before or ishe just making up stuff. The furthest laser I found on google travelled 2km.Thanks in advance.

Yes, a 10w yag laser could easily shoot 10 miles, and cost ya around 20 grand or more. You could spend less for an older water cooled model. (My buddy has one)

A 40w laser can shoot 30 to 40 miles and cost 100k.

A few yrs back I recall seeing in one of the ham magazines where they use two cheapy laser pointers to send morse code over several miles.

....I'd say he was probably telling the truth.. theres a big difference between seeying the dot reflecting back from what you're pointing it at, and someone at the other end seeing the beam coming at them.... If you're talking to someone at the other end with a mobile or radio it makes good sense.... from the other end you can easily see it from over twice as far...

the light doesnt go there, get largely absorbed by the target surface, and then reflect some light back the full distance....

Anyone here want to take a shot at using this technique to set up secure communications linkage? :D :D

Simple Laser Alighment Method v0.63

1. Attach a $2 laser to a parallel surface of the antenna pointing in the direction of 2nd antenna

2. Have a friend at the other location stare at your aligning laser through binoculars giving you directions.

3. Make slight adjustments until you hear "OH MY GOD! MY EYES, MY EYES!!"

4. Alignment Complete

 :D

Laser pens beam range is due to the power of the laser pointer itself, you say decided 10W power laser pen, the range is 10 kilometers, I think is possible,
for example, the range of 600 mw green laser pen for 2,000 meters .
