Some heavy requirements to use it!
Technical Requirements: Hotspot Shield runs on Windows 2000/XP and higher

Don't have a XP Home/Media Center or Vista machine to test on, sorry.
Heres the License Agreement:

OK, I know I'ma `tard for not have windiff or something similar to see what they really did.

OK now for some info:
The Hotspot Shield Control Panel is a Javascript/Ajax application which cannot run unless Javascript is supported and enabled in the browser.

They do list alot of "Commercial" free hotspots, no adds or pop-ups. Then again FF w/NoScript+Adblock.

Gives you a little system tray icon.

Over all free is free, somewhere they have to make a $0.10 to keep those 3 servers running. I'm guessing its from saleing services to the businesses they list in the Wifi Finder list.

I know, most anyone can get a ssl/vpn box setup and running at home for next to nothing. Yes it would safer, more secure if you did it your self too.

Bottom line, it appears to work.

Nice report, you get a B+ and you get to stay after class and clap the erasers.

Anything in there about "anonymous" logging of internet activity through the VPN?
